The Truth about Bike Insurance in Thailand | Pattaya Rent a Car
Motorbike insurance in Thailand is one of those topics where the gap between what people think they have and what they actually have can be enormous. This is a no-nonsense breakdown of how it works.
The Two Types of Motorbike Insurance in Thailand
Compulsory Motor Insurance (Por Ror Bor)
Every registered vehicle must carry Por Ror Bor. This covers medical expenses for victims of accidents up to set limits. It does not cover vehicle damage. It does not cover the rider. It is not proper insurance in any meaningful sense for the person on the bike.
Voluntary Insurance
There are three classes:
Class 1 β comprehensive: covers third-party injury, third-party property damage, own vehicle damage, theft, and fire. The most expensive and most complete option.
Class 2/2+ β covers third-party and own vehicle damage in collision with another vehicle. Does not cover single-vehicle incidents.
Class 3/3+ β third-party only. If you crash your own bike, you pay for it yourself.
What Rental Motorbikes Typically Come With
Many motorbike rental shops in Pattaya β particularly the cheapest β provide bikes with Por Ror Bor only. That means if you fall off, damage the bike, or crash into a wall, you are personally liable for all repair costs. At Pattaya Rent a Car, our motorbike rentals include first-class insurance cover. Before renting anywhere, ask specifically: "What class of insurance is included?"
Why Your Travel Insurance May Not Help
Many travel insurance policies exclude motorised vehicle accidents unless you hold a valid local driving licence or IDP. If you're riding without an IDP, your travel insurer may reject any claim from a motorbike accident.
The SCDW Option
Super Collision Damage Waiver (SCDW) removes your liability for damage to the rental vehicle, meaning no deposit is required. It does not cover personal injury β for that, you need travel insurance or a standalone personal accident policy.
