Have You Ever Witnessed a Car Accident in Thailand?

If you've spent any time on the roads here, chances are you've witnessed a car accident in Thailand. After 17 years living here, I've seen my fair share — but one thing still amazes me every time: when an accident happens, the drivers simply get out of their vehicles and leave them exactly where they collided, with total disregard for the time of day or the traffic building up around them.

When Leaving the Cars Becomes a Big Problem

One particular incident comes to mind. Two vehicles were involved in the most minor of accidents — you could barely even see where they had made contact. Even so, both parties did exactly what their insurance company had told them: leave the vehicles in place until an insurance representative arrived on the scene.

This might be reasonable advice in some circumstances, but this accident happened at 5:30pm on a Friday, right in the middle of town. The result was a major traffic jam that backed up for over an hour.

How It Was Resolved

I was curious to see what would happen, so I stayed to watch. The insurance representative arrived about 35 minutes later. He asked what happened, established who was at fault, and then advised the lady that she'd be better off simply paying the other party 1,000 baht rather than going through the insurance process — which she agreed to. She also paid an additional 200 baht call-out fee for the insurance rep. The whole thing was resolved in under 15 minutes.

The question is: could this not have been sorted out without holding up traffic for over an hour?
