Driving Licenses in Thailand: The 3 Types of Licenses

There are three kinds of driving licence that matter when you drive in Thailand. Here is what each one is, which one you need, and what we ask for when you rent a car from us.

Type 1: Your home country driving licence

Most visitors drive on the licence they already have. At Pattaya Rent a Car we accept your home country licence as long as it is in English. Bring the original card, not a photo or a copy, and your passport. We check both at handover and give them straight back.

Type 2: International Driving Permit (IDP)

An IDP is an official translation of your licence into several languages. It is not a licence on its own: you carry it together with your home licence. You can only get one in your home country before you travel, and it is valid for 12 months.

If your licence is not in English (for example Korean, Japanese, Chinese, Russian or Arabic), bring an IDP with it. We need to be able to read your licence, and so do the police at a checkpoint.

Type 3: Thai driving licence

If you live in Thailand long-term, a Thai licence is the best option. It is recognised everywhere in the country and you renew it every few years. You apply at the Bang Lamung Land Transport Office with your passport and visa, a medical certificate, proof of address and your existing licence, and you pass a short theory and reaction test.

Which one do you need?

  • Visitor with an English-language licence: your home licence is enough to rent a car from us.

  • Visitor whose licence is not in English: home licence plus an IDP.

  • Long-term resident: a Thai driving licence.

  • Motorbikes and scooters: your licence must include a motorcycle category. A car-only licence does not cover riding a scooter.
