Using a Foreign Driving Licence in Thailand

Using a Foreign Driving Licence in Thailand

The short answer: yes. Pattaya Rent a Car accepts your home country driving licence as long as it is in English. If your licence is not in English, bring an International Driving Permit (IDP) with it.

Can I drive in Thailand on a foreign licence?

Yes, visitors drive on foreign licences in Thailand every day. What matters in practice is that your licence can be read and understood: by us when you rent the car, and by the police if you are stopped at a checkpoint. A licence in English does that on its own. A licence in another language needs an IDP, which is an official translation.

Always carry the original licence (not a photo or a copy) when you drive, together with your passport or a copy of it.

What we need when you rent a car

  • Your original driving licence, in English (or with an IDP if it is not in English)

  • Your passport. We check it at handover and give it straight back. We never keep your passport.

  • A 5,000 THB cash deposit, refunded when you return the car

  • A minimum driver age of 23

What is an International Driving Permit?

An IDP translates your licence into several languages. It does not replace your licence: you carry both. It is valid for 12 months and can only be issued in your home country, so get it before you travel if your licence is not in English.

How to get an IDP

In the UK, apply through the Post Office. In the USA, through AAA. In Australia, through your state motoring association (NRMA, RAA, RAC, RACQ or RACT). In Canada, through CAA. In Europe, through your national motoring club, such as ADAC in Germany. You cannot get or renew an IDP in Thailand.

Motorbikes and scooters

To ride a scooter or motorbike, your licence must include a motorcycle category. A car-only licence does not cover it, and many travel insurance policies will not pay out for a motorbike accident if you were riding without the right licence.

Long-term residents: getting a Thai licence

If you are staying in Thailand for a year or more, a Thai driving licence is worth getting. It is recognised everywhere in Thailand and removes any questions about foreign licences. Apply at the Department of Land Transport with your passport and visa, proof of address and your current licence, and pass a short theory and reaction test.
