Utapao is a small single-terminal airport with a straightforward layout. There are no jetways — passengers board via stairs on the tarmac — but the experience is generally fast and stress-free. The airport is currently undergoing a major development programme across four phases, with an eventual target capacity of 60 million passengers per year.

Phase 1 (target completion 2024) — 15.9 million passenger capacity; new 157,000 sqm terminal building; high-speed rail and traffic links.

Phase 2 (target completion 2030) — 30 million passenger capacity; additional parking bays and Trav-O-Lator systems.

Phase 3 (target completion 2043) — 45 million passenger capacity; terminal extension and further facilities.

Phase 4 (target completion 2055) — 60 million passenger capacity; fully automated check-in, major terminal expansion.

Utapao is approximately 30 kilometres (about 20 miles) from Pattaya city centre. Travel time is typically around 45–60 minutes to central Pattaya and around 30 minutes to Jomtien Beach, depending on traffic conditions.

Car Rental at Utapao Airport

There are very few car rental companies at the airport — Avis is the main provider — and availability is limited. Don't expect to simply walk off the plane and into a rental car without a prior booking. Airport rental prices are also higher than booking through a Pattaya-based company in advance, and your options will be limited.

Public bus — Three routes connect Utapao to the eastern provinces, serving Pattaya, Sri Racha, Chonburi, Rayong, Chanthaburi, Trat, and Koh Chang. Buses seat a maximum of 19 passengers and are air-conditioned with GPS tracking. The Pattaya route takes approximately 45 minutes.

Taxi — Metered taxis are available outside the terminal. Always ensure the meter is switched on before departing and insist on a direct route. Taxi scams do occur — if you feel uncomfortable, ask bystanders for help.
