Tragedy on the Zebra Crossing: Why Thai Road Safety Must Change Now

This week, Pattaya and the rest of Thailand mourned the tragic death of Dr. Waraluck Supavatjariyakul. A young, dedicated doctor, she was simply walking across a zebra crossing to the hospital where she worked when she was struck and killed by a speeding motorbike driven by an off-duty police officer.

The incident, captured on CCTV, showed the doctor walking casually as one car waited for her—only for the motorbike to fly past and "wipe her out." This fatal incident has ruined two young lives and is an all-too-frequent occurrence on Thai roads. It must end.

The question is how? While there is no single "silver bullet," here are my four suggestions based on 18 years of observing the traffic culture here:

1. Increase the Driving Age to 23: There is no vital need for 18-year-olds to be behind the wheel, especially in cities like Bangkok where public transport is world-class. Increasing the age would ensure more maturity on the roads.
2. Pavement Barriers: We need physical barriers along pavements that funnel pedestrians toward designated crossings. These are standard in most Western countries for a reason—they prevent people from crossing in dangerous, unpredictable spots.
3. CCTV Everywhere: Policing every intersection manually is impossible. However, widespread CCTV coverage would make traffic violations manageable and provide the accountability that is currently missing.
4. A New Traffic Warden Department: I would propose a new government department dedicated solely to traffic wardens. Their only job would be to walk the streets and issue immediate fines to anyone violating traffic rules.
