Blackmailed: The Dark Side of the Rental Business in Thailand

oday was a dark day for Pattaya Rent a Car. About a week ago, it became clear that a Toyota Fortuner we had rented out was not coming back. The customer had gone "ghost"—not answering calls for days—and the GPS unit had stopped responding.

🚓 The Police Report

We immediately made a report at the local police station. To be honest, we did this purely for insurance purposes; we knew from experience that the police would likely do nothing (and they didn’t). We continued using our own resources and network to track down the customer and the vehicle.

📞 The Phone Call

We had almost given up hope when we received a call from a Thai man running a "car pawn" business—essentially a place where people hand over cars for immediate cash. He claimed to have our Fortuner in his possession. The relief in the office was immense... but it was short-lived.

💰 The Ultimatum

The man wasn't calling to be a Good Samaritan. He wanted 70,000 Baht.

His terms were straight out of a movie plot:

• Pay the money, and the car is returned.
• Don't pay, and the car would be across the border in Cambodia within the week.
• Involve the police, and we would never see the vehicle again.

🤝 The Standoff in Rayong

I was ready to walk away, but my Thai staff were convinced he was telling the truth. They were so certain they were even willing to put up their own money to secure the car.

They drove to Rayong to meet him. What followed was a tense standoff. He didn't trust us to transfer the money after getting the car, and we didn't trust him to hand over the keys after the transfer. Because he feared a police sting, cash was not an option.

In a desperate attempt to resolve the situation, my staff broke the standoff and initiated the bank transfer.

🛑 The Outcome

As soon as the transaction was confirmed, the man disconnected his phone and vanished. We are now down a Toyota Fortuner and an additional 70,000 Baht.
