Things to See and Do in Phuket

Phuket is a province in South Thailand made up predominantly of the largest island in Thailand – Phuket Island.  The island originally started out as a major producer of tin and rubber although in recent years has seen the majority of the islands income come from tourism.   The face of Phuket was sadly changed on 26 December 2004 when the island suffered severe damage caused by a tsunami from an earthquake in the Indian Ocean.  Thankfully, although those events will never be forgotten, the island has gone on to recover with homes and hotels that were damage now either repaired or replaced.

There are lots of things to see and do in Phuket but below are just 7 suggestions of ways you could enjoy your stay in Phuket:

  1. Koh Phang Nga Bay

The home of the famous island that appeared in the James Bond movie “The Man with the Golden Gun”, with the emerald green waters and limestone rocks majestically standing from the sea the bay is something that you will never forget!  There are a number of organised trips around the bay and these are probably the best way to take in everything that the bay has to offer.

  1. Koh Phi Phi

Perhaps the real star of Phuket is Koh Phi Phi.  The island has been shown in countless movies and always gets rave reviews.  The high cliffs, beachfront jungle and glorious long sandy beaches make this the ideal picture postcard and place to stay for a few days of R and R.

  1. The various viewpoints around Phuket

Phuket is beautiful; there is little doubt about this.  Luckily the island has a number of viewpoints all around giving the opportunity to see the island in all its splendour and of course get a few photographs.

  1. Big Buddha

Standing 45 metres high, the Big Buddha in the Nakkered Hills looks down on Chalong, Kata and Rawai.  The Buddha cost THB30 million to construct and can be seen from most of the south of the island.

  1. Phuket Old Town

Phuket has a rich a diverse history with travellers landing in the province coming from as far afield as Portugal, China and England.  The old town reflects the history of these visitors in the colonial and Chinese architecture.  This is a great way to spend a day just ambling around.

  1. Phuket FantaSea Show

This is something slightly different and perhaps not to everyone’s taste but the Phuket FantaSea Show is Las Vegas style show including trapeze artists, pyrotechnics and animals.  Traditional Thai culture and myths also influence the show.

  1. Patong Beach

Patong is on the west of the island and is the home to the islands nightlife.  Patong has everything including bars, agogos, restaurants and nightclubs.
