Khon Kaen is located in Isaan in the north east of Thailand as is fast becoming a popular spot for expats. Although the province and city are considerably different from Pattaya or Bangkok it is perhaps for this reason that is has seen a surge in popularity. Life in Khon Kaen is far more akin to traditional Thai life although in the city there are an increasing number of expat bars, shops and restaurants cropping up to cater for the demands of these new ‘locals’.
Although perhaps living in Khon Kaen is not for everyone, and dare I say it, most people, it is a great place to spend a few days taking in the sights – especially if you have a Thai companion from the area to show you around. Below is a list of things to do in Khon Kaen:
- Ubolrat Dam
The dam is located around 50 kilometres from the main city of Khon Kaen but is well worth the drive. Once you are here you can take in the magnificent river and mountain views. More views can be taken in from Wat Phra Bat Phu Pan Kham and the accompanying White Buddha. There are plenty of restaurants available and even a nearby golf course!
- Khon Kaen National Museum
The museum cost s just THB90 entrance fee and has a number of local artefacts on display. It was opened by the King in 1972 and has been popular ever since.
- Horse Racing
Not something that you generally associate with Thailand but Khon Kaen has it’s very own race track with races taking places almost every Sunday, starting around noon. Have a little gamble and enjoy a few beers whilst watching the horses go round!
- Wat Nong Wang
Thailand has a number of magnificent temples and this is just one of them. The temple has 9 tiers reducing in size but you can get some stunning panoramic views from top tier. Well worth the visit!
- Bueng Kaen Nakhon Lake
There are lots of lakes in Khon Kaen and it is hard to pick just one out. This lake has a selection of bars, restaurants and shops around it and is a relaxing way to spend an afternoon.
- Chonnabot – Silk Making Town
This is a silk making town to the east of Khon Kaen. There is a college that teaches silk making and sells the items that are made.
- City Pillar
Like most cities in Isaan, Khon Kaen has a City Pillar. The pillar is believed to house spirits that protect the city.
