In recent years Toyota has felt that they were losing ground in the small car market to the likes of Ford with their Fiesta, the Volkswagen Polo and the Mazda 2. In order to counter this perceived loss of ground, Toyota launched the all new Toyota Yaris for 2014. The new Yaris is available as a hybrid and comes with a range of trims to try and appeal to a wider audience.
The car is 100mm longer than the previous model and 20mm lower to try and rival some of the competitors in the hatchback market. The new version certainly more contoured than the previous models, again aiming to compete with rivals whilst trying to retain some of the traditional Yaris appearance. The car is available in both diesel and petrol formats as well as the hybrid – again appealing to a wider audience.
The petrol engine is slightly reduced in size to a 1.33 litre to match the current vogue although performance is not sacrificed as the 0-60mph in 11.5 seconds suggests. The 1.4 litre diesel has a 0-60mph of 10.8 seconds making it the fastest diesel in it’s class by almost a second. The Yaris is the second regular Toyota to offer a hybrid and unlike its key rival, the Honda Jazz Hybrid, the Yaris can run solely on electricity for short periods of time. With battery and engine working in unison, a 0-62mph time of 11.8sec is possible, albeit with a substantial amount of noise down to the CVT transmission. Fuel consumption for the petrol engine is around 52miles per gallon, the diesel 72 miles per gallon and the hybrid a whopping 81 miles per gallon!
As we know, Toyotas are manufactured in Thailand so this makes them all the more attractive in terms of cost along with being readily available and retaining their value. The car is perfect for city such as Pattaya due to its size, turning circle and being relatively ‘nippy’. Obviously as it is a smaller car, with a smaller engine fuel consumption is maximised especially for the diesel and hybrid formats as mentioned above. This is particularly important when the car is used on shorter journeys or in the constant stop, start of city driving.
